Cullen given economic brief

- SARAH HILLEY

A new face of power will join the table among South Ayrshire’s ruling councillors.

Ayr East councillor Chris Cullen is proposed to replace new MSP Siobhian Brown on the top leadership panel.

The SNP politician is to take over as portfolio holder for economy and culture.

A special council meeting has been scheduled to take place tomorrow (Thursday) to put forward the potential appointment for approval.

A council paper said:“Councillor Brown has recently intimated her resignation as portfolio Holder for Economy and Culture thereby creating a vacancy.

“The SNP Group has intimated an intention to fill this vacancy with councillor Chris Cullen. It is, therefore, proposed that the council appoints councillor Chris Cullen as Portfolio Holder for Economy and Culture.”

Mrs Brown will continue her role as an Ayr West councillor while being an MSP at the Scottish Parliament.

It has also been put forward that Councillor Cullen should replace Mrs Brown on the golf strategy and community wealth building working groups and the Ayrshire Regional Economic Partnership.

Other changes have been recommended for panels.

SNP Councillor Laura BrennanWhitefield is to take over Councillor Cullen’s position on Audit and Governance. SNP Councillor William Grant is to sit on the licensing board instead of Mrs Brown.

Councillor Cullen would no longer hold a position on the Partnerships Panel with Mrs Brown taking on that that role. SNP Councillor Douglas Campbell would take Councillor Cullen’s place on the Service and Performance Panel.

Councillors will vote on the potential changes at the full council meeting.
