Ayr gaffer delighted to get midfield starlet

- STUART WILSON

David Hopkin has tipped his Morton old boy Cameron Salkeld to help lead an Ayr United revolution.

The midfielder this week became the first new face through the door at Somerset Park.

And Hopkin says the 22-year-old will set the tone for what he expects from his squad in the new campaign.

He told the Post: “I’m delighted to get Cammy because he’s a lad with all the right attributes.

“He comes with a fantastic attitude and is someone I obviously know well from my time at Morton.

“He’s strong, will do a power of running for us and is versatile in terms of playing in midfield or up front.

“I know exactly what I’m getting with him and he should play a big part for us going forward.”

Hopkin expects to complete deals for two new centre halves this week and is also on the trail of former St Mirren utility player Nick McAllister.

But United may have to admit defeat in their battle to keep star turn Luke McCowan, with a new deal thought to be unlikely.

The Player of the Year has been offered lucrative terms to stay at Somerset but has a number of other offers on the table.

Another who has stalled on his offer to stay is Inverness goal hero Josh Todd, while Craig Moore has ended his six-year stay at Somerset to join Darvel.

One player staying on is striker Michael Moffat, with the veteran agreeing a new one year deal.

United will return for pre-season training on June 16.

The squad will travel to Stair Park to face Stranraer on Tuesday, June 29 before playing Hearts at Largs on July 2.

•United have knocked back a proposal from Rangers to have the Ibrox club’s Colts team play at Somerset next season.

Chairman David Smith said: “It was nice to be asked but given the impact it would have had on our pitch, particularly in the winter months, we decided it was not for us.”
