Busy summer of work is underway
Since I last wrote, Parliamentary and constituency business has been very busy as usual!
Recently, I was delighted to finally present a copy of my Early Day Motion to Fiona McAvoy, Head Teacher of Newton Primary.
This congratulated Fiona on being awarded MBE for services to education over three decades.
Fiona has been an inspirational leader with firm dedication to reducing the effects of poverty by supporting children in North Ayr.
I was also pleased to table an Early Day Motion in June congratulating the Ayrshire College HND Coaching and Developing Sport staff and students on their outstanding achievement of winning the‘TES Further Education best Teaching and Learning Initiative Award’for their mental health campaign,‘Mental Health United.’
At the end of June, I also had the pleasure of meeting (in person!) with representatives of the travel industry from Ayr, Carrick and Cumnock at Westminster. I supported their calls on
the Government to allow international travel to return safely in a risk managed way, and to bring forward a package of tailored financial support, including an extension of furlough support.
Over the past six weeks, as SNP Shadow Spokesperson for Crime and Policing, and your representative, I have been involved in the scrutiny of the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill, two days each week.
This has involved meticulous line by line scrutiny of the Bill, assessing its potential impact on my constituents.
As a former Detective Inspector myself, this was a particularly interesting experience.
While the majority of this Bill only applies to England, it would still apply to Scots who travelled to England to protest; and who could then face criminal repercussions.
As we move on into July, we can be hopeful that with future restrictions planned to ease, that life can begin to move further into normality this Summer.
Please keep safe and well!
