-

Tributes have been paid to a former Cumnock Academy school music teacher who died in a horror smash.

Gary Patterson is one of two men who died in a crash on the A713, near Patna, last Thursday at 4.40pm.

The 65-year-old, who played cornet with Dalmellington Band, was a passenger in a BMW 4 series that was involved in a collision with a black Volkswagen Sirocco and a Vauxhall Mokka. He led Dunaskin Doon Band to victory in the Second Section of the Carnegie Invitation Contest in Fife in April 1990. The 35-year-old male driver of the Volkswagen Sirocco, who has not been named, died in the incident.

Gary’s wife Miriam and daughter Catherine, 48, were injured in the accident. A 62-year-old woman’s condition was described as critical.

The 35-year-old driver of the BMW was taken to Kilmarnock’s Crosshouse Hospital where her condition was described as stable. The 48-year-old driver of the Vauxhall and her male passenger, 22, were both taken to Ayr Hospital. The man was released after treatment and hospital staff described the woman’s condition as stable. Dawn Miller posted on Facebook: “Terrible news, remember him from my days at Cumnock Academy. He was a great music teacher. So sad. Rest easy Mr P.”
