Secret shame of council

-

In all modesty, I think I’m reasonably handy when it comes to words.

They’ve been my living for almost half a century – and I’ve kind of got the hang of what most of them mean and what order they should come in. But I’ve read Eileen Howat’s defence of SAC‘press ban’in last week’s‘Post’at least five times – the final time after an Ibuprofen and a wee lie down - and I still don’t get what she’s talking about! It’s like she’s the Professor of Flannel at the University of Flanneltown. And her answers are as straight as a corkscrew.

I know four-year-olds that are having virtual meetings with three-year-olds – but SAC still can’t let a journalist listen in to a council meeting because of “current technology”. This isn’t a‘Covid’ press blackout – it’s a covert press blackout. The only place this current administration faces any real scrutiny or challenge is in the pages of this newspaper. And the less they give us to scrutinise – the better. Or so they think.

The Post’s job is to report to the public. It’s been doing it for a hundred years before most of this administration were born. And will still be doing it when this lot face the ultimate scrutiny!
