RaceRunning sensation Kayleigh Haggo is this week celebrating her second new world record in a fortnight.

The Maybole marvel moved a giant step up in distance as she negotiated a 5000m event at the National Championships on Saturday.

Haggo, 22, was recently celebrating after she set a new world record in the RR2 200m event at the Ayrshire Athletics Arena.

During that event she crossed the finishing line in a lieftime best time of 37.25 seconds.

But in Kilmarnock, Kayleigh kept her cool in the blistering heat and posted 20mins 8.94secs for the 5000m, which is now expected to be rubber stamped as another world record, subject to ratification.

Delighted Kayleigh said it was a team effort with coach John Owens and fellow racing star Kyle Brotherton supporting her.

She said : “It was 1000 per cent a team effort. I honestly can’t thank Kyle enough for setting the pace and encouraging me all the way.

“I’m absolutely delighted to have broken a world record at the 5000m.

“It had been in my mind to try a new challenge during lockdown and the 5000m was it.

“I’d trained hard for it and it’s very pleasing to see the hard work start to pay off.”

Kayleigh will be back in action this Friday, when she negotiates a 1500m RaceRunning event.

It’s been a cracking summer so far for the golden girl.

In June she added a European Gold medal to her vast collection after winning the Women’s RR3 100m final at the European Para Athletics Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland.

Again, Kayleigh was in blistering form, crossing the finishing line in 18.11secs, a lifetime best for the distance – and a new world record time.
