John Hair fell seriously ill at Ayr Belleisle Golf Course just as he was approaching the first tee.

Shocked pals rushed to his aid and called an ambulance but they were unable to revive him.

The devastating incident on Wednesday, July 14 at 2.20pm left fellow golfers “shaken” as they set off for a round on a scorching day.

Keen-golfer John was joining his regular group at the stunning Ayr course.

But as they set off from the clubhouse to the first tee disaster struck as the 69-year-old collapsed to the ground.

The Abbotsford Club Member was admired for being a “lovely guy with a love for the game”.

An insider at the club has told how “died doing what he loved.”

Grandad John lived in Ayr and was a father to two daughters, and according to his family “he will be greatly missed.”

A source who shared the course and the classroom with John has spoken of losing an absolute gentleman and said: “John and I went to school together, he was a really good friend growing up.

“Although we drifted apart, we palled up again when he joined the Abbotsford. He was just a lovely great guy. He was very well liked here and will be sorely missed.”

Members of the club returned to the course on the night of John’s death to lay a wreath in tribute to him.

A source added: “It was only hours after he died and there were 20 of us there to pay our respects, that just shows the kind of man he was. “We laid a wreath for him. He loved his golf. He was a very good golfer; at one point he got to a 14 handicap, he just enjoyed the game so much. Him and three of his friends would play golf every week. It has been a real shock for everyone. All our thoughts have been with his family.”

A police spokesperson confirmed the death of a 69-yearold man, they said: “The death is not suspiecious.”
