Mum unfit to drive banned from the road
Dangerous motorist mounts island while on a mix of booze and drugs
A mum drove the wrong way at a roundabout and mounted the traffic island while doing the school run.
Karen Armitage had mixed alcohol with prescription medication before getting behind the wheel of her Toyota Aygo.
The 45-year-old admitted being unfit to drive through drink or drugs and breaching the Road Traffic Act 1988.
She was spared prison and ordered to get help for her alcohol abuse when she appeared in the dock at Ayr Sheriff Court last Wednesday.
Prosecutor Alison McFadyen told the court the offence took place on March 17 in Ayr.
The court heard a motorist saw Armitage swerving across the road and contacted police.
When officers arrived, they could smell alcohol and noted that Armitage was unsteady on her feet.
Miss McFadyen said: “She stated to police she was on her way to drop a child off at school for the morning.
“Police officers noted it was the afternoon and that she was the only person within the vehicle.”
Defence solicitor Robert Logan said: “This was prescription medication mixed with alcohol.
“She is fully aware of how bad this was and is shocked by it.”
Sheriff John Montgomery said: “This is quite a bad example of dangerous driving, especially given it is in relation to a school run.
“You clearly require to deal with your abuse of alcohol.”
Armitage, of Ayr, was banned from driving for two years and placed on a 12-month Community Payback Order which will see her receiving alcohol counselling.
She was also ordered to pass the extended driving test before getting her licence back.
