Ayrshire derby is back
You wait 28 years for Ayrshire derby league match . . . and along come four in a single season!
The curse of my Monday deadline strikes again – as I write this sentence, the big kick-off is a handful of hours away. I’m betting that people who haven’t been to Somerset Park in decades will still be tuning into the BBC’s coverage of one Scottish football’s great derbies. I was at Somerset back in ’89 when Sludden and co rattled four into Killie’s onion bag. I recall the Killie fans giving us a two-fingered farewell as they trooped out the stadium. We gave them a two-handed reply . . . just to remind them of the four goals, of course!
And I know the history books will prove me wrong – but did we EVER lose a Ne’erday derby at Somerset Park? All I can remember are the celebrations! Stick my neck out? This page is famous for it! I’m going for a scoring draw – 1-1 or 2 – 2. Ally MacLeod once told me“Son, if you win every home game and draw every away game, there won’t be many teams looking down on you!”. In a debut season for our chairman and manager – who wouldn’t wish for Ally’s words to come true?
