A gardener for South Ayrshire Council based in North Ayr, Adam had become

a proud grandfather just weeks before the crash.

Partner Margaret Miller, 43, had to get a lift from Patna to Bellsbank due to the crash without knowing her beloved Adam had been involved.

She told the Post: “When the police turned up at the door, I told them to tell me they were lying to me, I didn’t want it to be true.

“It was my worst nightmare.”

The grieving wife of a council gardener who died in a horror smash has told of her heartache at his death.

Tragic Adam Smith has been named as the second victim of the smash near Patna last month.

Tributes have poured in for Adam who died at the scene of the horrendous road smash on the A713 near the Ayrshire village.

The step-dad to three girls was driving home from work when he was involved in the threevehicle collision which left two dead and four in hospital on Thursday, July 22 around 4.40pm.

The other victim, former Kilmarnock school teacher Gary Patterson, 65, was named last month as tributes were paid to the brass musician who was the passenger of a blue BMW 4 series.

Adam, 35, from nearby Bellsbank, Dalmellington died on a road he drove at least twice a day and was behind the wheel of a black Volkswagen Sirocco. A silver Vauxhall Mokka was also involved in the collision.

A gardener for South Ayrshire Council based in North Ayr, Adam had become a proud grandfather just weeks before the crash.

Partner of 16 years Margaret Miller didn’t want to believe the news as police chapped her door to tell her what had happened.

The heartbroken mum, 43, had to get a lift from Patna to Bellsbank due to the crash without knowing her beloved Adam had been involved.

However, hours later, cops arrived at her house to break the devastating news.

Margaret told the Post: “I was coming home from work at the time. I got told from the bus driver there was an accident in Waterside and I’d have to get off the bus in Patna.

“A man I didn’t know gave me a lift from Patna and to Bellsbank. I was trying to get a hold of Adam. I had called a few times, I even phoned my two daughters – one in Ayr and one in Cumnock – in case he might have taken a detour.

“When the police turned up at the door it was about half past eight.

“I told them to tell me they were lying to me, I didn’t want it to be true. It still hasn’t really sunk in.

“He was only just driving home from work – he must have driven that road at least two or three times a day.

“It was my worst nightmare coming true. You just never think it is going to happen to you.”

Adam, originally from Ireland, met Margaret 16 years ago and the couple settled in Bellsbank.

A step-dad to Margaret’s three daughters Leigh, Shannon and Rachel, Adam had become a proud papa of Alli on July 4.

Margaret has told how his death has left the family devastated – with his dad in Greece at the time of the tragic incident and his mum in Fife.

She said: “I’m going to miss everything about him.

“He was a great guy, he helped me do things I never thought I would. He helped me in my career to become a chef.

“I’ll miss his smile and his cheeky laugh – that is the biggest thing that everybody would say about him.

“He was such a chilledout guy, it took a lot to ever get him riled about anything.

“He just recently became a papa. It was a really proud moment for him. He’s been amazing with all three of my kids. He loved his family – he was there for all of them if they needed him.”

Since Adam’s tragic death, tributes have flooded in for him from the community and beyond, with former colleagues based in Ayr showing support.

Margaret added: “Everyone’s really pulled together – his close friends from Ayr have been amazing coming to check up on me.

“We really kept ourselves in Bellsbank, we both worked hard and we were hardly up here.

“He loved his garden, he loved walks, going drives, just being out and about in nature – that was Adam.”

Mourners paid their final respects to Adam at Masonhill Crematorium yesterday (Tuesday).
