Top artists drawn to exhibition across county

- ABI SMILLIE

The annual Open Studios Ayrshire exhibition is back next month showcasing top talent from across the region.

From landscape painters, abstract drawers, potters, sculptors and jewellery makers, a diverse range of artists and makers will come together over 30 venues over September 10 and 13.

Christine Fremantle, Sandra Ratcliffe and Jackie Ridge will be showing their work at Christine’s son Chris’studio on Queen’s Terrace in Ayr.

Sandra Ratcliffe, a former journalist for 29 years, has been painting for more than 20 years and enjoys capturing the elements with her stunning skylines and colourful landscapes.

She added:“Open Studios Ayrshire showcases the amount of talent there is in Ayrshire.”

Christine Fremantle, 86, is believed to be the oldest working sculptor in Scotland and primarily works with stone.

She said:“Sculpture is basically if you have an idea, you buy a block of stone and you take away to reveal.”

Jackie Ridge, a former teacher, describes her art style as‘eclectic’as she often uses mixed media, such as inks, oils and acrylics, to create her striking pictures, including her ever-popular puffins.

She said:“If you’re an artist in Ayr, you need never be alone. There’s always some group or some organisation that will embrace you.

Elaine Walker, who grew up in Dalmellington, is a surface designer known for her detailed printed textiles and patterns who will also be showcasing her art. She works mainly in oils and is inspired by her surroundings, using photos, detailed pencil drawings and nature to develop her prints and designs.
