Building beach park isn’t child’s play

Councillor says Brexit to blame for‘eyesore’site

- RYAN THOM

A popular beach park has been left an ‘eyesore’ after delays in construction.

The beach park on Troon promenade has been a state for months following the removal of the children’s attraction’s centrepiece.

A fenced-off pile of rocks on soil sits where a new pirate ship is set to be installed while a new train for young ones has come to a halt.

The old pirate ship structure fell into disrepair through lockdown - but frustrations are growing over when it’s replacement will be put in place.

Town councillor Craig Mackay had anticipated the works of the new play centre would be in place for May in time for the easing of restrictions and a booming summer - but for now the area remains fenced off.

Cllr Mackay said: “It’s a bit of an eyesore at the moment.

I’m really frustrated for the kids who have missed out for a year now not to have that equipment over the summer.

“The kids need proper equipment at the park. There are still swings and wee springy things but it doesn’t look as appealing as it is now.”

The new plans include a blue pirate ship, climbing frame/ nets and a slide all forming part of the structure.

But the pirate ship is yet to be delivered due to a lack of transport which has been blamed on Brexit.

Despite delays, Cllr Mackay is

insistent the council are not at fault for the stagnant site.

He added: “I’m as frustrated as everyone with these continuing delays. The issue on this occasion isn’t the council’s fault.

“There is a general shortage of construction materials and problems with transport affecting projects everywhere, not helped by Brexit.

“I know small contractors who have been really struggling to even get basics like cement and for the sake of Troon’s children I will continue to push for progress.”
