Probe into ‘leaking chambers’ to finish

- RYAN THOM

Council chiefs insist they are on track to complete a probe into ‘leaking chambers’ at Ayr Cemetery.

Investigation work is continuing at the eastern side of the site with dozens of graves under inspection.

Below ground graves are being delicately checked using cameras to search for suspected‘ water ingress’.

Mourners were told earlier this month that they would be unable to visit loved ones’ graves at the cemetery whilst the work takes place.

The Post last week was contacted by concerned families who were worried the probe will last longer than the three weeks originally stated. The work to check each grave across a vast section of the cemetery began on Monday, January 10 and is expected to finish by Monday, January 31.

However, despite concerns, the council believes it is on target to complete its work on time.

Bosses have remained tight-lipped on how many graves are being looked at.

A council spokesperson said:“The investigation works currently underway are scheduled to be finished by January 31, 2022 with the fencing being removed thereafter.

“The whole section of chambers has been cordoned off and screened to ensure privacy due to the sensitive nature of the works.”
