Tree tributes raise £7500 for charities

-

More than 800 residents paid tribute to loved ones by placing ribbons on a tree of remembrance.

A special Christmas tree, which was erected in Ayr town centre over the festive period, proved a huge success. Ayr Rotary Club arranged the event which ran between December 10 and Christmas Eve. A total of 825 well-wishers wrote a loved one’s name on a ribbon and placed it on the stunning tree display at Fish Cross.

And the tree coined it in for local charities with three great causes benefiting from donations.

Cheques of £2500 were handed out to Ayrshire Cancer Support, Ayrshire Hospice and Whiteleys Retreat.

Douglas Haddow of Ayr Rotarysaid:“The tree was manned each day by a team of volunteers, organised by Ayr Rotary’s Paul Williams.

“The success of it can be seen by the number of ribbons attached to the tree, which stood until January 4, 2022 at the Fish Cross, High Street, Ayr. No less than 825 individuals placed ribbons onto the Tree of Remembrance.”

The rotary club was also backed by a generous donation from a local funeral firm, with £500 pledged by M L Williams Funeral Directors.

Douglas added:“This was surely an impressive outcome in a first year, not forgetting the negative impact of Covid-19. “Thanks to everyone involved, and especially to the kind people of Ayrshire, who gave generously.”
