A fire at an Ayr bank on Monday led to a busy road being closed off as staff and customers escaped.

Fire crews and police raced to Virgin Money in the town’s Alloway Street at around 2.45pm.

Two appliances were sent to the scene including a height vehicle to tackle the blaze. Bank staff and customers were able to escape and there have been no reported casualties.

The fire is said to have started in the main part of the bank with an investigat­ion now underway.

A spokespers­on for Virgin Money said: “Everyone was fine and everyone got out okay. Thankfully no colleagues or customers were injured.

“We will let Scottish Fire and Rescue continue their work at the scene.”

A spokespers­on for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were alerted at 2.20pm on Monday, January 24 to reports of a fire affecting commercial premises on Alloway Street, Ayr. Operations Control mobilised two appliances and a height vehicle to the scene to extinguish the fire and make the area safe. There are no reported casualties.”
