£29m bypass hits top gear

- RYAN THOM

The eagerly-awaited £29m Maybole bypass is almost complete.

The opening of the new road is just weeks away and road chiefs say contractor Wills Bros Civil Engineering are making good progress to complete the project.

Fresh images of the bypass taking shape have emerged that show the brand new road.

The scheme is aimed at diverting traffic away from the town and on to the major trunk road.

Pictures taken by John Campbell show that white lines and markings have been added to a section of the road near Gardenrose path bridge.

John, a member of the A77 Action Group, has been capturing the progress of the works from when the first digger arrived at the site almost two years ago. The retired fireman of 30 years has followed the works closely and is getting excited over the multi-million pound project nearing its grand opening.

He said:“It has been good to look at all the progress of it, you can see how much work has gone into it and these latest pictures show the public that it is finally getting there.”

A Transport Scotland spokesman said:“Keenly anticipated by the local community, contractor Wills Bros Civil Engineering is making good progress towards the opening of the A77 Maybole Bypass in the coming weeks so that the benefits of improved road safety and better journey time reliability can be realised.”
