Celebrating the legacy of Rabbie
Since my last column, Parliament has now returned after the Christmas recess, and thankfully, I am now well enough to attend.
By tradition, on January 25, we celebrate the birth of Scotland’s Bard, Rabbie Burns, born in Alloway 263 years ago.
This year I was pleased to celebrate this anniversary by submitting an Early Day Motion Parliament to recognise the legacy of Rabbie , a man who is regarded as a pioneer of the romantic literacy movement, a cultural icon, revered in Scotland and across the globe.
Alongside attending numerous debates and committee meetings in Parliament, I was also pleased to recently table a further Early Day Motion, congratulating the village of Ballantrae on becoming the sixth ‘Biosphere Community’in Galloway and Southern Ayrshire’s UNESCO Biosphere, and the first in South Ayrshire.
This recognises the village as a destination for visitors who are
seeking sustainable, slow tourism experiences on Scotland’s UNESCO Trail.
In becoming a‘Biosphere Community’, the people of Ballantrae have committed to preserve the area’s natural environment and wildlife and celebrate their rich cultural heritage and local produce.
This is a great achievement for which I commend the residents of Ballantrae.
