25 YEARS AGO

More post-Chernobyl controls on the movement and slaughter of sheep in parts of Ayrshire are to be removed today.

Recent monitoring shows the controls are no longer necessary as the sheep no longer pose any threat to the food chain.

The Government introduced controls on 2000 Scottish farms after the Chernobyl incident in 1986. Controls still apply at 28 holdings in Stirling, East Ayrshire and Dumfries and Galloway.

50 YEARS AGO

Cumnock man George Vallance will propose the toast tomorrow night to the Aberdeen Burns Club, who meet for their 100th Burns Supper.

Leading Burnsian, Mr Vallance, who is a past president of the Burns Federation, will propose the toast in front of an expected crowd of about 150 members.

The gathering will take place at the Amatola Hotel, Aberdeen.

The dinner will, of course, include haggis, and, as an extra, finnan haddies.

100 YEARS AGO

The quarterly meeting of the Insurance Committee for the County of Ayr was held in the County Buildings, Ayr, on Saturday.

The Clerk, Mr James D Wyllie, explained that the Chairman and Vice Chairman were both absent.

The Chairman had Influenza and the Vice Chairman was in Ireland.

The general consensus among members present was that better conditions were just around the corner.
