Rotarians’ tribute to the Bard

-

Rotary in Alloway toasted the national Bard with a virtual Burns Supper last Monday.

Past President John Thomson acted as host, ably assisted by secretary Bill Campbell, who welcomed guests and friends.

Address to the Haggis, fiddled in by Wallace Galbraith, and Holy Willie’s Prayer were dramatically recited by Club President Bill Grant.

Burns Songs were beautifully sung by Wellington School pupils Joanna Meikle, Katie Thomson and Findlay Peters accompanied by Lorna Davidson and Malcolm Godsman.

The Fiddler from the Batchelors’Club, David T Moore, entertained with his playing of a selection of melodies associated with Burns. The highlight of the evening was The Immortal Memory spoken from Burns Cottage by Hugh Farrell, one of Ayrshire’s renowned Burns scholars. He traced the Bard’s life, occasionally becoming Burns himself, from the Cottage to farms at Mount Oliphant, Lochlea, Mossgiel and Ellisland, his time in Edinburgh until his final home in Dumfries. The club are hopeful that their 2023 Burns Supper will be enjoyed face-to-face.
