25 YEARS AGO
A rescue helicopter from HMS Gannet in Prestwick was yesterday summoned to a group of climbers in distress.
The incident unfolded when a pair of climbers from Dublin ran into difficulties while undertaking an ice ascent at the Cinderella Climb on the 2,700ft Inner Corries in the Creag Meagaidh range between Spean Bridge and Laggan.
The helicopter was able to winch the injured men aboard.
50 YEARS AGO
John Player and Son came back into golf sponsorship yesterday as they announced a substantial link-up with a high profile tournament, to be played later this year at Turnberry.
They will stage a John Player Classic at Turnberry, from September 27 to September 30 with a prize fund of £51,000- with £1,500 going to the overall winner.
Entry will comprise a select field of winners over the previous 12 months , including those from certain major tournaments.

The annual meeting of the Ayrshire Agricultural Association was held in Ayr yesterday, Mr David W. Shaw, of Ayr, presiding.
The financial report and statement was unanimously approved.
The Marquis of Bute was appointed president and the Earl of Stair, the Hon G. Corb ett, and Mr W.T.R . Houndsworth were appointed vice presidents.
The April show at Ayr was also fixed for 25th and 26th of that month.
