New appeal following spate of ATM attacks
Detectives told how a recent attempted robbery at an ATM on a petrol filling station forecourt could be part of a spate of similar robberies across Central Scotland.
The Post reported that would-be thieves tried to steal cash from the standalone machine at the Shell garage in Ayr’s Prestwick Road, on Sunday, January 30.
Between Sunday, January 30 and Wednesday, February 2, cash machines were targeted in Milngavie, Ayr, Motherwell and Livingston.
While the majority of these incidents were unsuccessful, a six-figure sum was taken from the ATM in Motherwell.
Two men, aged 32 and 30, have been arrested and charged and are remanded in custody.
But officers believe there are other individuals involved and are urging the public with any information to come forward.
Detective chief inspector Graeme Lindsay, who is leading on these inquiries, said: “So far, our investigation has resulted in two arrests but we are keen to identify all others who played a part, and I am hopeful that our communities can assist with this.
“If you remember seeing any suspicious activity around the ATMs in Milngavie, Ayr, Motherwell and Livingston, in the days preceding or at the time of the incidents, then please contact police immediately.
“Similarly, if you believe you may have any relevant CCTV or dash-cam footage of any of these incidents and have yet to pass it on to us, then please do so as soon as possible.”
Anyone with information should contact police on 101, or alternatively telephone Crimestoppers on 0800 555111, where calls are free and anonymity can be maintained.
