United’s new facility can prove the best bar none

- STUART WILSON

Ayr United’s new social club is to roll out a string of exciting events aimed at boosting on and off field success.

Cameron’s Bar, already proving a huge hit with supporters on busy matchdays, is now aiming to spread its wings.

And club bosses are looking to offer social events throughout the week that will keep punters coming back.

That all adds up to more money through the coffers at Somerset Park, where every penny of profit at the new bar is plunged back into the football operation.

United’s commercial boss, Martin Tocker, told the Post: “We’re off to a great start with Cameron’s already a key part of the matchday experience for many.

“But the potential is there for so much more and that’s all part of our strategy moving forward.

“Private functions will become an important part of what Cameron’s offers during the rest of the week.

“We’re looking at Q&A nights with former players and legends as something that would prove a very popular feature.

“Other ideas include a Sunday poker league and a quiz night and regular features that will make the bar a go-to destination far beyond matchdays.”

Cameron’s – named after former chairman, Lachlan, and his late father Donald – has been hailed as a long overdue addition.

Martin added: “I spoke to some of our older fans who came in on the first day we opened and they remarked how they’d been coming since the 1960s and this kind of facility was on the cards back then.

“So they were actually rather emotional walking in to see this finished article.

“When you go around the country and visit clubs like Stenhousemuir and Peterhead...they have their bars and it’s exactly what the supporters want.

“It’s the chance to put your money straight back into the club you love.

“Every penny of profit this bar takes will go back to Ayr United Football Club and that’s massive for us going forward.”

Cameron’s beer garden become a key feature in the warmer days and nights with a BBQ event for the AU500 Fund among the ideas under consideration.

Martin added: “More tables are coming for inside the bar. Each one is currently named after a club legend and that’s something that’s proven to be a very popular feature.

“We’ll be running a poll among fans in due course for which players’ names go on the new tables.”

Cameron’s is also available for public hire and the venue can be booked for a range of private parties and functions.
