Curling is alive and kicking
Well done to Team Scotland - sorry, Team GB! – for bringing home some gold and silverware from the Beijing Winter Olympics.
I wouldn’t know one end of a curling stone from another – but I do know that Ayr and Ayrshire have a enjoyed a long association with curling . . . and the stones they throw! Some of the lads in the pub were asking if there was a local club. I assured them Ayr Curling Club was alive and well at Limekiln Road near Tam’s Brig. I also told them that over 40 clubs use the Ayr facilities – with memberships approaching 600 – 700.
And if anyone wanted to try this exciting and very social sport – the website at www.trycurling.com would help them. But like many sports clubs around the country – Ayr’s facilities could always use some finance for improvement. Scotland invented the sport of curling – and gave it to the world. And clubs like Ayr – who have been around since the Second World War – should be top of the funding support list!
