Hearing unit honour named after doctor

-

A hospital that helps patients with their hearing has re-named a unit after a pioneering doctor.

In celebration of International Cochlear Implant Day on February 25, the cochlear implant team based at University Hospital Crosshouse,, has renamed the unit,‘The Raj Singh Cochlear Implant Unit’. Dr Singh (pictured above) is the founder of the Scottish Cochlear Implant Programme.

Agnes Allen, Head of Service for the Scottish Cochlear Implant Programme, explained why the team wanted to honour Dr Singh.

She said:“Raj was the founder of the cochlear implant programme, and his work has helped so many people from all over Scotland to hear.

“We wanted to thank him for his dedication over the years. And what better way to do that, than to name the unit after him.”

Raj, who was awarded an OBE in 1994 for his cochlear implant work, was an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Consultant in NHS Ayrshire & Arran from 1969 until he retired in 2000. He established the Cochlear Implant Programme in 1989.
