SGN insist gas network in the area is safe

- RYAN THOM

Residents’ gas meter fears in Kincaidston are to be addressed by engineers.

Gas chiefs will return to streets to remove meters from inside households “where possible”.

It comes after more than 30 residents took up the matter with community leader Robert Dunn .

SGN is still progressing through the streets rocked by an explosion six months ago.

Engineers have been replacing iron pipes with a safer plastic alternatives as they rip out the entire network.

A campaign launched by shattered residents saw SGN start immediate works, with residents calling for safer gas mains and meters to be moved outside.

Robert who led the campaign said: “More than 30 residents contacted me through the page concerned they had not had their gas meters placed outside.

“When I started my campaign it was with the view to making things safer and that meant placing gas meters away from the house.”

But SGN has stated there are no safety concerns with indoor gas meters.

A SGN spokeswoman said: “Before our project began in November 2021, we notified all residents that when replacing the gas services to individual properties, although there are no safety issues with an indoor gas meter, everyone would be given the option to move indoor meters to an outside meter free of charge. This has been offered to every property where we’ve so far replaced the gas service pipe. We’ll continue to do this for the remaining properties over the final few weeks remaining of our project. Where an outside meter box isn’t possible due to technical reasons, or where residents preferred an alternative position, we discussed that directly with the individual householder.

“Any pipes that we replace to an internal position will have all below ground metallic pipework replaced and be completed to current standards

“For the flats on the estate, we previously explained to residents the position of their meter may have to remain where it is, although all the gas service pipes will be upgraded.

“If any resident in the Kincaidston estate who we’ve already visited has since changed their mind and would prefer their meter box to be moved outside, we’re more than happy to do this.”
