Student’s plea to help young people back into work

- ABI SMILLIE

A university student is throwing his hat into the ring for May’s elections to South Ayrshire Council.

Todor (Jnr.) Radic, 23, is standing as an independent candidate for Girvan and South Carrick.

The MSc Big Data Technologies student, from Girvan, hopes he can‘reinstate’ South Ayrshire’s motto‘Ne’er forget the People’by fighting for community needs.

Todor declared: “The biggest motivating factor [to stand for council] was my experience with the campaign for protecting Girvan’s Common Good Land.

“Leading the coordination efforts of this has shown me the importance of working with other people to create and communicate solutions which balance the needs of the community.

“I have seen how the lack of taking onboard community input by the council has led to avoidable unhelpful actions being made, such as fencing off open space for the later abandoned expansion of the seaside play park.

Todor, who is currently class representative on his course, says standing as an independent would allow him to get behind projects and campaigns, regardless of politics.

He said: “I didn’t want to have any potential restrictions on what I could do, campaign for or support.

“I can recognise proposals that benefit the community and support them regardless of who they were proposed by.”

And Todor has plenty of ideas to shine a light on the needs of Girvan and South Carrick.

He said: “Reading local news brought about my awareness of the campaign to establish a South Ayrshire-based Citizens Advice Bureau, which if done would empower local people with the provision of free and impartial legal advice.

“There is a lack of opportunity for people looking for work in the town. Why can’t the Carrick building be used as a type of skills centre to help young people to help them into work?

“Local businesses also need to be supported and unused buildings could be repurposed for housing.

Todor added:“It would be a great honour to receive your vote on May 5.”
