Pupils collect supplies to send to Poland

- STUART WILSON

Big-hearted school pupils have been digging deep to help support refugees fleeing war-torn Ukraine.

Children at Troon’s Marr College have amassed a haul of items to send over to Poland for use by those in dire need of support.

Pupils, staff and their families donated items - including first aid supplies, toiletries, baby milk, nappies, warm clothing and kids’ backpacks.

Many local community groups also donated at Marr’s drive-thru drop-off.

S6 student Aidan Doak, who volunteered at the after-school drop-off, said:“It was brilliant to see the amazing generosity of the public.

“With the amount we raised, it is bound to make a difference.”

S6 students gathered the donations at the town’s St Meddans Church Hall, where they will be packed on to vans and delivered directly to a community in Poland.

Everyone in school wore the colours of the Ukrainian flag with their school uniform to show their support and S6 held a bake sale at interval and lunch, raising a further £300.

The art department also decorated the dining hall in Ukrainian bunting and sunflowers, the national flower of Ukraine.

The school’s Just Giving page (https://www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/marr-college4) has raised over £2,400 and this money will be sent directly to the DEC appeal when it closes on Thursday, March 31.

Head teacher George Docherty said:“I’m really proud of how

S6 and the school community responded to the appeal.

“Sincere thanks to our students, staff, parents and the wider community for their donations and many thanks to St Meddans Church for allowing us to join their own fundraising campaign and finding a way to transport the items directly to where the support is needed.”
