Swimmers make a splash at open-air pool

- ABI SMILLIE

Swimmers are in for a treat as New Cumnock’s open-air pool reopened for the season.

The pool is Scotland’s only heated freshwater open-air swimming pool and is once again welcoming back swimmers.

And with the sun making a welcome appearance across Ayrshire, there seems no better time to fish out the bathers and head for a dip.

The outdoor lido welcomed 37,000 visitors to East Ayrshire from all over the world in its first full season following refurbishment in 2017.

The revamped facility was opened in June of that year by HRH Prince Charles, who is president of The Prince’s Foundation, the charity who run the pool, and whose headquarters are at Dumfries House, near Cumnock.

The reopening news was welcomed by eager youngsters from nearby New Cumnock Primary School who popped along for a splash.

Mary Clapperton, duty officer at The Tamar Manoukian New Cumnock Pool, also couldn’t wait to get back in the water and enjoy a swim with granddaughter Frankie.

She said:“All the staff here at the lido can’t wait to welcome our regular swimmers and visitors back.

“The pool is such a hub of the community .

“We are really looking forward to seeing people back in the water embracing the mental, physical and social benefits of outdoor swimming as we head towards spring.”

Booking is essential ahead of visiting the pool and can be done so by calling (01290) 333 891.

Payment by card or contactless payment at the pool is preferred but cash will also be accepted.
