One rule for Chancellor’s family and another rule for us

-

In a month when the UK Chancellor increases taxes for ordinary people who are already struggling with a cost-of-living crisis, to hear that his own family is using an outdated and somewhat immoral practice, introduced in 1799 to avoid paying tax on millions of pounds or earnings, is particularly galling.

How can we expect this chancellor to step up and provide assistance to the people who need it most when his own family is doing its best to deprive the very department Mr Sunak is in charge of.

You really couldn’t make it up, but it does appear that there is one rule for the rich, as long as you fork out £30,000 for‘non-dom’status, and one rule for the rest of us.

If that wasn’t enough, there are now also questions regarding the chancellor’s residency status.

Why Mr Sunak kept his US green card (officially known as a Permanent

Resident Card) for six years whilst an MP, and 19 months of those as chancellor, isn’t quite clear yet.

What is does tell us is that there are potential conflicts of interest with the man in charge of the UK’s finances.

For the rest of us, energy prices are going up, the chancellor’s 5p fuel duty cut (remember his awful PR stunt with a supermarket employees’car?) hasn’t had much impact on prices at the pump and inflation figures continue to rise.

For any constituents struggling with energy cost, there is limited support out there from various agencies.

Please get in touch to see if my office can assist or direct you to an appropriate agency or scheme.

My constituency team are on hand to assist with queries. I also have scheduled in person and virtual advice surgeries. Contact 01290 319126 or elena.whitham.msp@parliament.scot for more information.
