Estate gas safety meet and walk

- STUART WILSON

Gas chiefs are to face the residents of Kincaidston again amid ongoing safety fears from those living within the estate.

Bosses at SGN have agreed to attend a meeting and walk round with SNP council candidate, Chris Cullen, today (Wednesday).

It follows the news that a newly-installed gas meter had been found to be leaking.

We told how resident Steven Mclaughlin discovered gas pouring out of the device – installed as part of measures to offer “reassurance” in the wake of October’s devastating blast.

Engineers from a contractor used by SGN had only visited his address in Thistle Walk the previous week as part of major replacement works on the estate.

SGN is currently ripping out the entire network of old iron pipes to replace them with new, safer plastic versions.

It comes in response to the explosion which ripped through four homes in Gorse Park on October 17.

Residents have been angered by the news that Health & Safety Executive (HSE) inspectors probing the blast will not reveal their findings, leaving a desperate search through Freedom of Information requests to get closure.

Now there are growing fears from residents over the safety of the replacement works – and the lack of answers over what caused the devastation seven months ago.

SGN insisted the leak in Thistle Walk was an “isolated issue” but pledged to carry out further checks to offer “reassurance”.

Now they will meet with Mr Cullen and any residents who may have concerns.

An SGN spokesperson added: “We’re now in the final few weeks of our upgrade project in the Kincaidston estate and work is continuing to progress well. Our project manager and engineers are on site every day of the week and are always happy to answer any customer queries if approached.”
