25 YEARS AGO

The meteoric rise of Tiger Woods has forced the R&A to revamp its policy of allowing children free entry to into this Summer’s Open championsh­ip at Royal Troon.

Children will still be allowed to watch the championsh­ip, but they will have to be accompanie­d by a responsibl­e adult, or produce a badge from the R&A in advance.

The move has been taken following Tiger’s win in Augusta, which has prompted high levels of interest in golf from children.

50 YEARS AGO

Married at Ayr to dental surgeon Marjorie Pritchard was the popular, efficient stage manager of the Ayr Gaiety Theatre, Wally Walsh.

Wally has been a stalwart at the Ayr resort since spending seven years backstage at the London Palladium and some time at the Leeds Grand.

Wally will be back from honeymoon with his new bride shortly and embark on promotiona­l work for the summer season at the Ayr Gaiety.

100 YEARS AGO

As is usually the case, the sections of the Clydesdale horses formed one of the most important features of the annual two-days show of the Ayrshire Agricultur­al Associatio­n.

There was a very large turnout of the public yesterday when the judging of the stock took place.

Most classes were filled well and the standard of quality was well above the average.

The brood mares were not numerous but they were of decided merit.
