Ayr United’s progressive work on and off the park has been hailed during a debate in parliament.

MSP Siobhian Brown paid tribute to the vision of the club in helping to foster closer links with their ladies team.

It follows her visit to a training session with the women in which she learned about their experiences in the game.

Ms Brown spoke to parliament as part of a debate on sexism within football.

But she confirmed United are very much on the right path and hailed their ongoing work in ensuring equality between the ladies’and men’s teams.

She said:“Under the leadership of Assistant Head Coach, Clare Docherty, and new owner and chairman of Ayr United, David Smith, the future looks bright for the Ladies team and Ayr United as a whole.

“There are ambitious plans for growth and a closer link between the players and the club.

“For the first time ever the women and men came together for a joint awards ceremony to recognise both groups’ achievements.

“Next season, the Ladies team will wear the same kit as the men, presenting them as a serious and professional force.

“I would encourage local businesses who are interested in seeing the women’s sport develop to consider sponsoring the ladies team.

“Football is an important source of our local and national pride.

“I look forward to watching Ayr United grow and succeed and I hope to support them however I can in my role as MSP for Ayr.”
