I was so sad to read of the death of former Post political correspondent, Jim Cuthbert.

To everyone involved in politics in Ayrshire during the years he was with the Post, Jim was a giant in political reporting. In all my years as a councillor and then as an MP, I always found him courteous and fair and never had to worry that he might misquote me. Jim had great insight into the issues and always ‘got it’.

He was also kind to me on a personal level.

I always felt he could have been an outstanding journalist with a national newspaper but he chose to stay covering the local scene in Ayrshire.

Young journalists today could do worse than re-read Jim’s writing in past editions of the Ayrshire Post for a masterclass in how to do the job. Sandra Osborne, Symington
