Thought for the week..

- Compiled by Irene Howat

Yesterday was May Dayand many parts of the world celebrateditwith a holiday. WhenI was a girl, May Day meant getting up a few minutes earlierthan usual and going out to wash my face in the dewthat lay on the grass. I suppose someone, at sometime, told mewhy but, forthe lifeofme, I can’tremember. No doubt it wasdeeply symbolic … of something or other! There is a great deal ofsymbolism involved in washing and cleanliness. Oneof the psalms in theBible begins with a plea for mercy.‘Have mercy onme,OGod, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion.’ Later thewriter prays,‘Wash me, and I shall bewhiter than snow.’God’s greatest act of mercy is to wash us clean from our sins through the LordJesus Christ. Onlythose whocome seeking mercy experience God’s cleansing power. (seePsalm 51:1, 7)
