Highhouse memories

It’s another peek into Ayrshire’s rich mining history, with a snap of Highhouse Colliery in Auchinleck.

The colliery opened as far back as 1894 and was in use right up until 1983, when our picture was taken. As Auchinleck was home to a large mining community, the closure of the pits had a huge impact on the village, with massive job losses.
