Tragedy as man dies after falling into river

Emergency services raced to the scene near town’s Holmston Road

A 60-year-old man has died after falling at an embankment by the River Ayr.

A huge emergency response sprung into action with police, fire crews and ambulances racing to the scene near to Holmston Road on Thursday about 2.05pm.

The man was recovered from the water but sadly he was subsequent­ly pronounced dead.

A Police Scotland spokespers­on said: “We were made aware of a man having fallen at an embankment by the River Ayr, off Holmston Road, around 2.05pm on Thursday, May 5.

“Emergency services attended and the 60-year-old man was recovered but was subsequent­ly pronounced dead. There are no suspicious circumstan­ces and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”

Scottish Fire and Rescue service told how they sent water rescue teams to the embankment and hauled out two people from the river, a man and woman.

An air ambulance landed at nearby Kyle Academy during the incident.

The Scottish Ambulance Service was contacted but didn’t respond as we reached our deadline.
