Hugh sends a loud message
Veteran councillor Hugh Hunter said his victory as an independent sent a loud message to his former colleagues, writes Stuart Wilson.
The 77-year-old cruised to a first stage win in Prestwick, just months after being dumped by the Tories.
And Hunter admits their last minute decision to stand three candidates against him gave him“extra resolve”to prove his worth.
He said:“I was getting good feedback on the doors, but you’re always nervous. So I’m absolutely thrilled to get through on the first round.
“It’s probably little to do with my campaign and more to do with my previous 23 years in office.
“In that time I’ve looked to constantly work with the people of Prestwick and support the local groups, parent councils and voluntary groups.
“I think if you represent
people properly, they recognise that.
“What happened with my time ending at the Conservatives was tough but there was never a question that I would have given up.
“My resolve was particularly strengthened when they chose to stand
three candidates in the ward.
“That particularly irritated me.
“But I have been humbled by the great number of people who have chosen to put their faith in me again.
“My campaign team has been fantastic and I owe them a huge debt of gratitude.”
