Throw some welly as village gala is back

Big family day to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee

- PAUL BEHAN

Top ‘welly chuckers’ from around the world are being invited to battle it out for supremacy during the build-up to a village’s gala day celebrations this summer.

Organisers of the Monkton gala day have included the popular competition on their list of events for this summer’s showpiece - and it’s hoped they can draw a big entry field.

Monkton gala day is back and will return to the village on Saturday, June 11.

Organisers have called the event the Monkton Jubilee Gala Day in what is seen as a nod to Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum

Jubilee this year. Details are still to be firmed up but the parade will start on Monkton Main Street at 12.30pm on the day.

A spokesperson said: “The parade starts at 12.30pm at the top of Main Street and fancy dress is optional. Watch for the gala timetable coming through your letter box soon.

“Pre-gala week, we have an international welly chucking competition in the park. Watch for the adverts on Facebook, in the shops and the community notice board.

“There will also be treasure hunts for everyone and the full gala day programme coming soon.”

In other news, members of Monkton Community Council (MCC) last month erected two iconic Tommies at the entrance to the village war memorial in Monkton.

The Tommies are two silhouettes of British soldiers with the words ‘Lest we Forget’ underneath.

They can be seen as you approach the front of Monkton War Memorial.

A community council spokesperson said: “The funds to purchase the two iconic Tommies was donated by BAE systems, Prestwick, and is much appreciated.

“MCC would also like to thank Hugh at HIE engineering for providing us with two poles and Carol Trigger for providing us with power.”
