Labour candidates in the running for election

- PAUL BEHAN

Two Labour candidates have started the new year on an election footing.

Labour candidate for Central Ayrshire, Alan Gemmell, was out on the streets of Prestwick and Irvine to launch his bid to be the next MP for the area.

And Elaine Stewart, Scottish Labour candidate for Ayr, Carrick and Cumnock, joined Anas Sarwar, elected MSPs and other General Election candidates as the party promoted their message to Scottish voters.

Mr Gemmell said: “I have this message for the many families starting 2024 worried about the cost of living, about council services pared to the bone, and how long it will take to get their next hospital appointment.

“2024 is the year we can begin to change all this. This year, we’ll have the opportunity to vote for change.

“As your next Labour MP, I will work tirelessly on your behalf to bring about the change Central Ayrshire needs.”

And Ms Stewart joined Anas Sarwar in Rutherglen and Hamilton West, where Labour won a seismic victory against the SNP last year, to help announce a package of measures and policies which they hope appeals to voters.

Mr Sarwar told how Labour will ensure growth in the economy coupled with strong employment rights- starting with Labour’s New Deal for Working People.

Ms Stewart said:“This package from Labour will lift people out of poverty, it will put more money into people’s pockets and the overall economy, this will increase the revenue into the public purse, helping fund our precious NHS and education system.

“When you grow up and live in Ayrshire you know the value of good, well-paid jobs.

“Our communities did not create the high levels of unemployment and poor work opportunities, rather we fell victim to the kinds of social and economic problems experienced here following managed lack of investment by a rotten Tory Government.

“I will fight every day to ensure child poverty is eradicated from our communities and this New Deal from Labour is the change we need to ensure that children and families across Ayr, Carrick and Cumnock do not need to struggle to make ends meet.”
