DIRT RACE CHOPS

-

The third machine ’ere, again, belongs to Shaun ‘Dr Death’ Gemmell, but it was lent, at Dirt Diggers, to his mate Scott Chaisty to race, and he acquitted himself well on it, despite being forced into the wall in one race as he tried to avoid a crashing scooter in an Inappropriate Road Bike round.

This one’s based around a quite rare machine: a 2002 CCM604, one of their rather nice R30 supermotos, and the Rotax motor’s been hopped up a little with a Rex’s Speed Shop ignition, a rejetted flat-slide carb with Ramair filter, and a one-off oversized exhaust with stubby endcan. The wheels’re from the same R30, and’re

seventeen-inch three spokes with steel-plate covers, and they’re shod with very grippy Continental TKC80 tyres (I’ve got these on the Future Bike and they really do grip well) and, unusually, they have brakes – Brembos front and back (although Shaun does remove the front brake lever for racing). The forks’re the stock USDs fitted to the raked headstock of the one-off frame that he made for it. It’s another tight-fitting trellis that hugs the motor, and’s short at the back and raked at the front for a more chopper look than the Dommie. The ’bars’re drag ’bars; there’s a one-off oil tank; a single-cap Mustang tank; a single sprung seat and a dinky rear ’guard; a folding number-plate mount (the same as the NX650); and bags of attitude. Of the two bikes, it’s the more chopper of the pair, and not as easy to ride as the ’Onda on the dirt, but it’s still a bit of a thing.

Actually, those of you with very long memories may remember a very pukka rat years ago called ‘Monster Munch’? As we were doing the pics, I kept thinking the CCM reminded me of something, but couldn’t quite put my finger on quite what. I mentioned this to Shaun and he said: “Monster Munch in AWoL? I loved that bike and copied it.”

Like the Honda, the CCM may be up for sale later in the year – again, contact Shaun through Facebook if you’re interested.
