Callum levels late in a cracking derby

-

A LATE equaliser from Callum McMinimee earned Llannerchymedd a point from a hardfought 2-2 home draw with Llangefni Town at Tan Parc last Saturday.

This long-awaited Welsh Alliance Division Two game was nearly called off due to the weather conditions, but Medd’s band of brothers turned out with forks in hand to dispel the standing water before a pitch inspection from the match official ended with a thumbs-up.

The home side started the better with pressing runs from Gavin Sharpe down the right flank, one seeing him slide the ball through to Matthew Jones, who shot wide.

Llangefni then upped their game, and from a raid down the centre the ball fell nicely for Sean Pritchard, whose fierce effort was dealt with by keeper Kenny Hughes.

With 17 minutes on the clock a lovely floated ball by Deion Evans out to the right found Sharpe, who set up Jones to fire past Liam Ewing for 1-0.

With half time approaching the hosts had a penalty shout from Daniel Thomas turned down when he appeared to be taken out from behind by

Controversy followed as Medd had a goal disallowed for offside when Roberts headed into the net after the ball had been deflected on to him off a Cefni defender.

Matthew Jones, again free on the right, chipped Ewing but cleared the bar as the half ended with the home side deservedly ahead.

Llangefni upped the ante after the restart and on 64 minutes Craig Evans tapped in his 22nd goal of the season from a tight angle to level matters.

The visitors were now in command and five minutes after the equaliser a Iwan Jones shot made it 2-1.

This seemed to get Medd’s backs up as they attacked with more intent before a late challenge on Dylan Owen by Cefni’s Pritchard saw him get his marching orders.

Medd attacked again, Roberts hitting the upright from the acutest of angles.

With minutes remaining substitute Iwan Williams and Evans combined to set up McMinimee to make it 2-2.

This Saturday sees Llannerchymedd entertain Penmaenmawr Phoenix, while Llangefni host Meliden.
