Myles treble sees Hotspur into the semi

-

MYLES JONES was an extra time hat-trick hero as Holyhead Hotspur knocked holders Caernarfon Town out of the Huws Gray Cup with a thrilling 4-2 victory at the New Stadium last Saturday.

Town posed the early threat, Cory Williams and Kevin Roberts shooting just wide, but on 13 minutes a mistake by visiting keeper Paul Pritchard allowed Kenleigh Owen to score.

It was nip and tuck as both sides pressed without troubling the keepers, but Caernarfon began to see more possession before the break.

This continued after half time and on 69 minutes Town’s Carl Owen missed a great chance, shooting over from close range.

Shortly earlier, Kenleigh Owen was twice denied by keeper and defender from a rapid counter.

On 80 minutes Ryan Jones was in the clear, but Pritchard, quick off his line but in no-man’s land, brought the Hotspur man down and received a straight red.

Undeterred, Caernarfon pressed for an equaliser and in the 87th minute home glovesman Carl Jones made a brilliant save to foil Darren Thomas.

Town substitute keeper Damian Bialozynski also made a cracking stop from Kenleigh Owen just after coming on.

Then deep into injury time, the Cofis’ Carl Owen lashed a Williams corner into the roof of the net to force another half-hour.

In extra time, Ryan Jones and Gareth Jones-Evans hit good efforts for the hosts, but on 101 minutes a ball from the right reached Thomas, who shot home in style past Carl Jones.

Although one man down the visitors looked strong, but then came the Myles Jones show, as he finished off assists from Dan McGinness and Ryan Jones to make it 3-2.

To complete the turnaround Mike Kelly was twice denied by the keeper, but Jones fired the rebound home much to the delight of the Hotspur players and fans in the 400-plus bumper turnout.

Holyhead now advance to the semi-finals of the competition where they await the name of their next opponents.
