BOY racers speeding across a city business park are causing concern with the police and community leaders. Officers were called to Parc Menai in Bangor on December 29 after receiving reports of speeding cars in the area.

A spokesman for North Wales Police said: “There have been issues in the past.

“We can confirm we received a call following concerns over speeding motorists in Parc Menai on Monday evening but on officers arrival, the vehicles were no longer on the scene.”

Councillor John Wyn Williams, who represents the Pentir ward, said: “A few people have told me about motorists speeding in the area during the evening as Parc Menai is the type of place, which would attract racers because it is quiet at that time of day.

“There’s no point in reducing the speed limit as it would be difficult to enforce.

“I think there’s the possibility the council may be able to have some sort of co-ordinated effort with the police if speeding becomes a serious problem in the area.”

As with a lot of towns and cities, Bangor has had it’s fair share of problems with speeding motorists in recent years.

Members of the public have reported concerns about the problems on the High Street in which motorists, some of them on quad bikes, have sped up towards and past the cathedral and driven down towards the Lidl store.

In Maesgeirchen, there was recently a campaign to reduce the speed limit on an estate in a bid to crackdown on boy racers has been backed by councillors.

The concerns stem from a number of incidents and near misses in recent years, particularly in the Queens Avenue area of the estate.

Residents handed over a petition, with almost 1,000 signatures, to the-then county council member Cllr Keith Greenly-Jones asking Gwynedd Council to reduce the speed limit from 30mph to 20mph.

As a result of this, Gwynedd Council confirmed it was to introduce a statutory 20mph within the Maesgeirchen area.

There have also been road improvement measures carried out on the A4244 road at Pentir.

Following pressure from both Gwynedd councillors and Pentir community councillors, road safety measures were introduced in 2013, aimed at enhancing road safety and reducing car crashes on the road.

Anyone with any information should phone North Wales Police on 101.
