Unbeaten run is over

-

LLANGEFNI’S unbeaten run in Division Two North ended after nine straight wins when they lost 17-9 at Abergele.

Cefni had the wind at their backs in the first half and the powerful left pegs of Rhys Hughes and Sior Grieves guaranteed they dominated the territory.

Two Hughes penalties put them 6-0 up after 15 minutes.

However, a mixture of lack of height and the wind meant Cefni could not win the quality lineout ball needed to launch concerted attacks.

When Gele got possession they made the hard yards and won several penalties at the breakdown.

A sin-binning of Grieves seemed very harsh as there had not been a warning and the offence was dubious.

Back to their full complement on the half-hour, Llangefni’s attacks led to another three-pointer from the boot of Hughes.

However , they were failing to put real pressure on the home line as Aber’s defence held firm.

The nine-point cushion at the break did not seem enough, and Gele were relishing the chance to play downwind.

Abergele started the second period all guns blazing and soon notched a converted try.

Cefni responded very well in running out of defence with some skilful inter-passing.

Then the game had to be halted for over 10 minutes as Huw Jones suffered a serious knee injury while competing for the ball near his 22.

On resumption Gele again pressed in the Cefni 22.

The islanders escaped and produced an excellent passage of phase play to move 60 metres upfield. However, when Aaron Jeffries was isolated in midfield Gele kicked the turnover ball back down into the Cefni 22 and soon won the penalty which gave them a 10-9 lead with 15 minutes to go.

Llangefni rallied but a Hughes penalty hit the post.

Gele went for the jugular and duly grabbed a deserved penalty try to seal the win.

This Saturday it is back to the Swalec Bowl and a home game for Llangefni against Shotton Steel.
