Corrig at the double in big shock at Pen

-

BOTTOM team Pentraeth upset the odds with a superb 3-1 victory over leaders Trearddur Bay United in Welsh Alliance Division Two.

Jamie Davies’s Traeth side made their early pressure count by nabbing a thirdminute lead.

Corrig McGonigle saw the keeper off his line and struck an instinctive volley which nestled into the bottom corner.

Bay were reliant on set pieces to create their best chances, and a corner eventually led to the equaliser in the 40th minute.

A Ryan Booth floated delivery was nodded in by Barry Lavelle at the back post to make it 1-1 at the interval.

Pentraeth again took the game to their high-flying visitors after the break, Rees Roberts denied by an outstanding reaction stop from keeper Mike Doutch.

Bay rallied and started to pin the Sandmen back, but Traeth still threatened going forward through the pace of McGonigle.

With just 10 minutes left, McGonigle again saw the keeper off his line and let go an early shot. The ball landed just inside the post to make it seven goals in two games for the ace marksman.

There was still time for Bay to grab an equaliser and Ryan Connolly’s strike was kept out at full stretch by Gary Cox.

In the closing stages a McGonigle free kick into the box was met by a fantastic leap from Tom Parry, who guided his header home to seal a famous victory.

Pentraeth might fancy their chances of making it three wins in a row when they entertain a Bethesda side just three places above them this Saturday (2pm).
