Luxury flat plans for derelict hotel

-

PLANS to demolish a former hotel have been revived almost eight years after £11m plans to build luxury apartments on the site failed due to the economic downturn.

The former Bryn Tirion Hotel, in much desired Red Wharf Bay on Anglesey, has been closed for over a decade.

Following its closure, developer John Wood spent three years fighting to demolish the former hotel and build 21 buy-to-let apartments with prices starting from £500,000.

Despite a vocal campaign against the development local by residents , it was given the go ahead in May 2007.

During that time, a public protest was mounted, with three petitions and nearly 200 letters of opposition over issues about the size of the development and traffic impact – leading to a three-year planning row over the site.

But a year after permission was granted, Mr Wood declared that the plans had been ‘mothballed’ due to the economic downturn.

Speaking in 2008, he said: No- one would push ahead with a project like this in the current economic climate.”

But now Anglesey Council has received a new planning application for the site, once again planning to demolish the hotel but in favour of five detached dwellings.

Applicants RedWharf Limited, in their Design and Access Statement accompanying the application, noted: “The proposals outlined are for the demolition of the existing buildings and the construction of five new four bedroom detached dwellings which make the most of their elevated position overlooking Red Wharf Bay.”

Its also stated that existing site access point will be moved 40 metres to move it away from its dangerous position on a crossroad junction.

The statement goes on to say: “The building has been vacant now for over 10 years and despite security and general maintenance arrangements being in place, it has now become detrimental to the character and appearance of the area. The scale and density of the proposal is lesser than as previously approved.

“The proposed development therefore provides an opportunity for the housing and their occupiers to be integrated into the local community rather than focused towards the holiday letting market as per the previously approved scheme for 21 apartments.

A decision is expected to be made by Anglesey Council planners over the coming weeks.
