Maes Tryfan pavements becoming a danger:

-

THERE are claims cracked and broken pavements on a city housing estate could cause a serious accident unless urgent action is taken.

Residents living at Maes Tryfan in Bangor have now threatened to take legal action unless “dangerous” state of the streets is improved.

The complaints relate to the hole strewn pavements on estate in the Glyder ward of city, which have eroded over the years and which residents say have seen little in the way of maintenance.

Bangor woman Steffie Williams said that after hearing numerous complaints from residents about the state of the streets, she took a drive through the estate to see them for herself - even resorting to measuring some of the cracks with a ruler.

“It has to be seen to be believed,” she said. Miss Williams said she was particularly concerned about the condition of Lon y Glyder but said that the pavements on the estate’s Lon Powys, Lon Ogwen and Trem Elidir were “no better”.

“I spoke to a resident who had lived in the street for more than sixty years.

“In living memory, she couldn’t recall anything more than patchwork jobs being done on this pavement.

“She also has a husband with Parkinson’s disease and fears him falling one of these days, especially in the cold and icy winter we’re experiencing.”

Miss Williams said there were a number of “patches” outside homes which were filled by Gwynedd Council in but the majority of the area had been left untouched

“The postman on his round told me how he often slipped and twisted his ankle on the uneven surface and how he feared one day suffering a serious injury putting him out of his job, a job he loves, for a long period of time” she added.

“I am therefore putting Gwynedd Council on notice.

“They are now fully aware of the dangerous condition of these pavements, and if anyone trips, slips or falls on these pavements in Lon y Glyder, Lon Ogwen, Trem Elidir or Lon Powys, as a community we will seek legal advice.

“Falls due to pavements kill 200 elderly people in Wales every day according to a report by help the aged in 2007 and we are asking that this not be one of the areas that fall into those statistics any longer.”

A Gwynedd Council spokesperson said: “As a council, we regularly inspect the condition of roads and footways across the county, with remedial work carried out as necessary.

“Surface treatment work has already been programmed for Lon Ogwen, Lon Glyder and Lon Powys and should be undertaken in the coming months.

“Further works are also programmed for Trem Elidir later in the year.”
