Albert Owen voices Royal Mail concern
Môn MP Albert Owen has met with Royal Mail officials to discuss postal and distribution services on Anglesey.
The meeting follows the announcement that Royal Mail is to centralise distribution services on Anglesey to the Llangefni sorting office with offices in Holyhead and Amlwch set to close.
Following the meeting, Mr Owen said: “Workers at all three sorting offices and members of the public have raised their concerns about the future of services on the island following Royal Mail’s announcement.
“Royal Mail have insisted that there will be no job losses which is great news. However, I do have concerns about the logistical upheaval its plans will create. From a distribution point of view it does not make sense to move operations away from two large centres of population on the Island.
“From the point of view of customers, Royal Mail also need to consider how this move will impact on pick-up of parcels.
“Accessibility is a key issue. I have asked Royal Mail to look into access at the Llangefni sorting office for both workers and customers.
“There has been a massive expansion of parcel distribution due to the increase of online shopping. With people out at work during the day they need to be assured that there parcels will be available at a location that is secure and within easy reach of their homes. We should be looking at convenient pick up points across the Island and I have raised this point directly with Royal Mail.
“On this point, there also needs to be coordination between Royal Mail and Post Office Wales. We should be looking at an integrated service.”
