She loved to dance

AFUNDRAISER is to be held later this month in memory of an Anglesey woman who had a love of northern soul music.

Mother of one, Christine Dixon, passed away in October last year aged 60 after a three year battle against breast cancer, which later spread to her bones.

But due to her love of Motown and Soul music from growing up during the early 70’s, her husband has decided to arrange a fundraising evening in her memory. All funds raised will go towards the hospice where she stayed briefly before her untimely death.

Gareth Dixon, Christine’s husband, said: “Growing up in Bangor during the late 60’s and early 70’s - many of Chris’ friends were involved with the North Wales Soul scene. She loved to dance.”

Christine was originally diag- nosed with breast cancer but it later spread to her pelvis, spine and skull.

Almost immediately after starting chemotherapy in 2011, Christine also suffered a thrombosis in her right shoulder which paralysed her right arm, meaning that many day to day activities were almost impossible.

Gareth, who worked as a Mobile Offshore Drilling Rig Project Manager for Transocean Offshore, has lived in Beaumaris since he was eight years old.

But after the couple married in 1979, they lived in Bangor and later Llanfairpwll before Gareth was posted to assignments in Indonesia before moving back to the town where he grew up three years later.

They also have one son James, who now lives and works in London.

Gareth, who is also known locally as ‘Bob’, said: “Chris and I both were stunned and amazed by the real care and warmth shown to us both by all staff at Ysbyty Gwynedd’s Alaw Ward, Hafan Menai where she received extensive treatments, and finally St David’s Hospice in Llandudno.

“We were only at St Davids for a relatively short period of time, but they were so kind to Chris, family and friends at a very difficult time in our lives.

“When you are so close to death, it makes you feel so vulnerable - but the people at St David’s really managed to relax Chris, made her feel safe, valued and took care of her right until the very last moment of her life.”

The Northern Soul and Motown charity night is taking place at the Bulkeley Hotel, Beaumaris on Saturday February 14 between 7pm12.30am. Tickets £5 on the door.
