Double Matt finish a real boost for Medd

LLANNERCHYMEDD edged closer to the top two teams in Lock Stock Welsh Alliance Division Two last Saturday with a 3-0 triumph at Flintshire outfit Greenfield.

Gareth Parry’s men made it an impressive 13 wins in 17 league starts and will no doubt aim to boost that record to 14 from 18 when they welcome Mynydd Llandegai to Tan Parc this Saturday (2.30pm).

Another Matthew Jones brace and a Deion Evans cracker sealed last weekend’s success at Holywell.

The Anglesey side had banished their reputation as slow starters in recent games, but at Greenfield the old problem reared its ugly head as they produced a poor opening, a better middle and an excellent finish to the match.

Lowly Greenfield lost at Tan Parc five months ago but displayed some brilliant football in the process and their excellence was there again early doors as Llan appeared half-asleep.

Wave after wave of attacks by the home side took apart Llannerchymedd’s midfield, Evans in particular not looking like his old sparking self, continually losing the ball in the centre and his usual pinpoint crossfield deliveries were falling short.

Greenfield’s Marc Gunther and Scott Beck missed chances they would usually convert after the home midfield ripped through their opponents. The central operators had done the hard work in supplying the ball beautifully to feet, but the finish was lacking.

With the first half nearing its end, Medd started to move the ball better with Matthew Jones now pushing the defence further back, causing confusion and mistakes that Llan capitalised on.

A cross-box centre saw Pat Roberts pounce and score, only to be deemed offside.

With seconds remaining before the interval whistle, the ball fell for Matthew Jones again. This time he took the shot himself, scoring the first of his double and taking his team in for the break a goal to the good.

The second half started better for the visitors, who were now attacking and moving the ball better.

The slow start was over, the better middle passed and now the islanders were taking total control as the closing stages loomed.

The match was looking like a onegoal contest but this soon changed as a cracking floated cross by the brilliant Chris Evans saw Jones bring the ball down onto his chest, twist and turn and fire past experienced keeper Danny Stanton for 2-0 in the 85th minute for his 20th goal of the campaign.

Stanton never had time to recompose himself as from the restart a now on fire Deion Evans shot low and hard from the edge of the box, beating the outstretched keeper and securing Llannerchymedd a now deserved three-nil win.
